The playing field within the plug-in hybrid SUV game was shaken with the 2021 introduction of the Wrangler 4xe. By meshing gas and electric power with the Wrangler’s world-famous 4×4 platform, Jeep achieved what many vehicles have not. The Wrangler 4xe’s plug-in hybrid powertrain begins with a turbocharged 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine that is equal parts powerful and efficient. This engine works in conjunction with two electric motors that are powered by a rechargeable 400-volt battery pack. The first electric motor replaces the Wrangler’s alternator at the front of the engine to provide seamless stop-start function of the engine and optimize the regenerative braking process. The second electric motor is found inside the transmission, where the Wrangler’s torque convertor would otherwise be. This allows for instantaneous torque distribution because electrical power is instantly available to the wheels, while mechanical power needs to be built up before the wheels move sufficiently. Combined, the gas and electric power of the Wrangler 4xe provides an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, the Wrangler 4xe essentially eliminates the range anxiety that often comes with EVs, as the gas engine can be used when the battery is depleted. Additionally, the electric system can be disengaged manually using the E-Save button to allow it to recharge with regenerative braking and save the battery power for a later time. The Wrangler 4xe also features Hybrid mode, which is the default setting, and Electric, which disengages the gas engine.

It is virtually impossible to deny that the Jeep Wrangler is instantly recognizable from the trails to the city streets. Its design is rugged from front to back, with an upright seven-slot grille, round headlights, trapezoidal fender flares, and swing gate-mounted spare tire. As we mentioned above, the Wrangler 4xe received a refresh for the 2024 model year. One of the most prominent upgrades was made to the grille. While keeping the upright posture and seven-slot design, designers added a new color scheme with black textured slots and Neutral Gray Metallic bezels encompassed by a body-color surround. Many Wrangler enthusiasts have experienced the snagging on branches of the steel mast antenna. Jeep solved this problem in 2024 with the windshield-integrated stealth antenna, which is standard across the lineup. The Wrangler 4xe is also available with wheel options from 18 to 20 inches with ten new designs and color schemes. The interior of the 2024 Wrangler is where most of the upgrades come from. The Rubicon’s capability begins with the Rock-Trac part-time 4×4 system. Rock-Trac features a two-speed transfer case, meaning it has both 4-High and 4-Low drive modes. The system’s 4-Low mode should be used while off-roading on rugged terrain, as it provides more torque to the wheels while crawling at lower speeds. It does this by providing a gear ratio of 4:1 while in 4-Low, meaning the wheels turn once for every four rotations of the transmission output shaft. Jeep introduced the Rubicon X to the Wrangler and Wrangler 4xe lineups for the 2024 model year, which feature Rock-Trac full-time 4×4, providing the same two-speed transfer case and 4:1 low-range gear ratio while also providing 4×4 traction at all times with automatic shifts in torque distribution to counteract tire slip. The Rubicon’s all-terrain capability goes far beyond the 4×4 system, however. It also includes essential off-roading equipment like 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac all-terrain tires, locking front and rear differentials, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, additional skid plates, high-clearance fender flares, and FOX shock absorbers. Meanwhile, the Rubicon X is upgraded with 35-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO2 all-terrain tires, beadlock-capable alloy wheels, upgraded steel bumpers, a winch-capable front bumper, a forward-facing trail camera, and more.
