At the state level, EV customers are eligible for two rebates. First is the residential vehicle rebate, with which customers can receive a refund of up to $500 per vehicle when purchasing or leasing a new or used plug-in electric vehicle from a retail automobile sales company. Additionally, those enrolled in the CARES program are eligible for an extra $700 rebate per vehicle. To qualify, the vehicle must be registered with the DMV at the address associated with the TID customer. Each customer account is limited to two electric vehicle rebates. EV customers can also receive a rebate of up to $300 for each new Level 2 electric vehicle charger installed at their home. Those enrolled in the CARES program are eligible for an additional $100 rebate per charger. To qualify, a qualified plug-in electric vehicle must be registered at the customer’s address. Each customer account is limited to two residential charger rebates, and portable chargers are ineligible for this offer.

Another rebate is available in the form of a tax credit courtesy of the IRS. The EV tax credit consists of a base amount of $2,500. However, the maximum total credit available is $7,500. For EVs with batteries with a capacity of at least 7 kilowatt hours (kWh), a credit of $417 is added for each additional kWh. For new EV owners, the minimum tax credit is most commonly $3,751. To qualify, there is a series of criteria that the vehicle must meet. First, as was previously mentioned, its battery must have a minimum capacity of 7 kWh. It also must have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 14,000 pounds. The battery must also be made by an approved EV battery manufacturer. Additionally, the final assembly of the vehicle must take place within North America and follow the critical mineral and battery component requirements. The car must also be purchased new or leased; pre-owned vehicles are not eligible. Finally, the vehicle must be charged by an external power source, meaning the tax credit includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles but excludes self-charging hybrids.
