How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Mechanic with Tires

Our Turlock dealership recommends regular tire rotations to help the tires on your new or used vehicle last longer. Rotating the tires is a relatively small yet vital part of maintaining your car, truck, or SUV in Modesto. How often should you rotate your tires? Find out more details about when to rotate tires with our helpful guide.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires on Your Car?

We highly recommend rotating your vehicle’s tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. That’s approximately every four to six months of driving at 1,300 miles per month. Your actual maintenance interval may change from this range based on several factors, like the number of miles you drive, what conditions you drive in, the quality of your tires, and their current wear.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires for FWD & RWD Car?

So how many miles to rotate tires? Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles for FWD or RWD vehicles. Again, check your owner’s manual to confirm this figure.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles differ slightly. The engine on a FWD vehicle sends power to the front axle, while RWD vehicles send power to the rear axle. As such, you’ll need to rotate tires in a certain pattern based on where the drivetrain sends power.

The tires on a front or rear axle will wear out faster than the other, depending on which wheels get power. For example, the front wheels will wear out faster on a FWD vehicle. Because a tire rotation creates a balanced rate of wear across all four tires, you’ll save money over time because you won’t replace tires as often.

Tire Rotation Tips for FWD and RWD Vehicles

Do you love DIY vehicle maintenance? Rotate your tires in your Manteca garage by flipping the sides when you move the rear tires to the front on a FWD vehicle. Move the right rear tire to the front left, for example. When you move the front tires to the rear, however, keep them on the same side. So the left front tire goes to the right rear for FWD.

When you rotate the tires on a RWD vehicle, invert the steps for the FWD vehicle. When you move the front tires to the back, put them on opposite sides. The left front should go to the right rear position. When you move the rear tires up front, they can stay on the same side, with the back left to the front left.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires for AWD Vehicles?

Rotate tires every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for an AWD car, truck, or SUV. For more specific information, look at your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Do you frequently go off-roading like in your new Jeep Wrangler? Do you love taking your Dodge Charger to your favorite racetrack? The tire rotation interval will become more frequent because off-roading and racing create more tire wear than regular driving.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires: Importance of Rotations

Regular tire rotations save you money over time. Primarily, tire rotations can prevent accidents and tire blowouts. They also extend the life of your tires since you’ll need new tires less often.

Other benefits of tire rotations include:

  • Improved handling and better road traction during all conditions
  • Lowered stress on your car’s drivetrain due to optimal rolling resistance
  • Better fuel efficiency from better handling on the road
  • Less road noise to hear inside the cabin
  • Improved safety for you, your family, and other drivers

All types of tires need to be rotated at regular intervals, including high-performance, off-road, racing, and all-weather tires.
