Top Sequoia National Park Off-Road Trails

Often considered one of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the Sierra Nevada, the Dusy-Ershim is a must-do for experienced off-roaders. This multi-day adventure typically takes 2-3 days to complete and winds through dense forests of giant sequoias and pines, over rocky terrain that tests even the most capable rigs, and across high-altitude meadows with breathtaking panoramic vistas. Be prepared for steep climbs that demand low-range gearing, tight switchbacks that require precise maneuvering, and potential water crossings that may vary in depth depending on the season. High clearance (at least 12 inches), four-wheel drive with low range, and durable off-road tires are absolutely essential. Recovery gear, spare parts, and extensive off-road driving experience are highly recommended, as help can be far away. This trail is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced drivers but offers an unparalleled sense of accomplishment and access to some of the most remote and beautiful areas in the Sierras.

While not strictly an “off-road” trail in the traditional sense, the Sherman Tree Trail access road can present some challenges depending on the time of year and recent weather conditions. It’s a moderately maintained dirt and gravel road leading to the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume. While most high-clearance vehicles, including SUVs and trucks, can typically navigate it, it’s always wise to check conditions with the National Park Service beforehand, especially after rain or snow. Sections of the road can be narrow and winding, and they may have washouts or rough spots. Driving slowly and cautiously is advised. The reward? Standing in the presence of this giant, General Sherman, is an awe-inspiring and humbling experience, regardless of the road conditions.

The Case Mountain area, located within Sequoia National Forest (adjacent to the park), offers a more extensive network of forest roads suitable for off-roading.  These roads vary significantly in difficulty, with some being relatively easy, well-maintained gravel roads suitable for most high-clearance vehicles and others requiring more advanced skills, specialized equipment like winches and skid plates, and a greater understanding of off-road navigation.  Always consult current maps from the Sequoia National Forest and check with the Forest Service for up-to-date regulations before venturing out, as some areas may have seasonal closures due to snow, fire risk, or to protect wildlife. This region provides an excellent opportunity to explore the less-traveled parts of the area, offering a quieter and more secluded off-road experience and potentially discovering hidden gems like small waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and less-visited groves of sequoias.

The areas surrounding Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are crisscrossed with a network of Forest Service roads, logging roads, and other unpaved routes.  While not all are suitable or legally accessible for off-roading, some can offer scenic drives and access to remote areas for camping, hiking, and fishing. Be sure to research thoroughly, obtain proper maps (Forest Service maps are essential), and check with local authorities before exploring these roads, as conditions can change rapidly due to weather, logging activity, or natural events.  Many of these roads are unmaintained, so a high-clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive is highly recommended. Remember always to practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out everything you pack in, and respect the natural environment and any private property you may encounter.
